Ten aircraft will take off tonight from about 9 p.m. to bomb the shipyards in Hamburg. Visibility was ideal throughout and six aircraft easily located the target, which was already a mass of flames. The bombing was accurate and several aircraft reported enemy fighters in the vicinity, but none attacked the Hampdens. Four aircraft had serious technical problems. The aircraft, AD908, reported that severe vibrations had occurred and the aircraft would not climb above 15,500 feet. At this altitude the tail could be seen shaking from side to side. Then, when the intercom broke off, the aircraft flew straight back to base and landed safely. Strangely, AD843 also failed to exceed an altitude of 15,500 feet. It therefore bombed nearby Sylt and returned safely to base. Another aircraft was also unable to exceed 13,500 feet and so decided to bomb Cuxhaven before returning safely to base. Finally, X3145 and its crew faced a hair-raising situation. As they crossed the Danish coast, the starboard engine oil pressure dropped rapidly, so the bombs were dropped immediately.
