Bomb disposal squad Cuxhaven Firefighting group 2 (1939 - 1945)
By the end of the war in May 1945, the Allies had dropped almost 2000 explosive devices of various kinds on Cuxhaven. On average, 20% of the bombs were duds that did not explode, which would be 400 bombs. Just under half were defused by the clearance forces during and after the war. One positive aspect is the number of unexploded bombs that went into the Elbe. Despite the surveys, there are certainly still some unpleasant surprises lurking in the soil of our city that no one knows about. Nothing is known about the Cuxhaven bomb disposal unit of fire brigade 2 itself, apart from a few photos in the city archives. However, this unit was probably stationed in "Fort Thomsen" at the then munitions factory. According to reports, aerial bombs were stored there after they were defused. What happened to them afterwards is not known. It is also not entirely clear which branch of the military and unit it belonged to. However, it is to be assumed that this was also part of the Navy. The area of activity here was not limited to the city of Cuxhaven, the bomb disposal experts were obviously active in the entire Elbe-Weser area, as the photo below shows.

Some documents from the former chief pyrotechnician Gruschwitz from the naval arsenal about his bomb disposal work from 1943 to 1945. He came to Cuxhaven in 1942 and was deployed from "Fort Thomsen" to clear bombs after they had been attacked.
