Marine Auxiliary from Meseritz

(formerly Province of Grenzmark Posen-West Prussia, today Międzyrzecz in Poland)

At that time, naval helpers were drafted into the anti-aircraft batteries at the mouth of the Elbe, not only from the high schools and middle schools in the city of Cuxhaven, but also from other parts of the former Reich. In addition to Stendal and Tangermünde, former students from the Meseritz high school also had to go to Cuxhaven to do their service here.I would like to thank the Meseritz Homeland Association for publishing the eyewitness report of a former naval helper from the Kugelbake battery from the Meseritz high school at the time.

In the autumn of 1943, most of the students in our class were called up to serve as naval assistants in the Marine Flak Division MFLA 214 in Cuxhaven on October 18th. While we were still allowed to take the passenger train from Meseritz to Landsberg/Warthe, we had to change to a waiting freight car in Landsberg, which took us, accompanied by Corporal Knolle, on a three-day leisurely tour with two overnight stays to Cuxhaven, where we were quartered in the Grimmershörn barracks, directly behind the dyke, about halfway between the Alte Liebe and the Kugelbake. There we met students from a class from Tangermünde and another from Stendal, who had brought an older teacher with them to supervise their schooling. In addition to military exercises and missions, the duty roster included three hours of school lessons every weekday morning. Depending on the length of the nightly air raid missions, the lessons that followed were shortened by one or two hours or cancelled altogether. The above-mentioned teacher was supported by a corporal, who in civilian life was a professor of mathematics at the University of Munich, the senior petty officer Brasseur, a teacher of modern languages, and a lieutenant, the leader of one of the anti-aircraft batteries, who in civilian life was an industrial chemist. In the afternoon there was occasionally an hour of singing under the direction of the corporal Knolle, the civilian leader of a dance orchestra. Werner Klose
