From 1890 to 1989, the Sahlenburg shooting range was located on the eastern edge of the Wernerwald. The range consisted of three 25-meter lanes for firing handguns and submachine guns, as well as two 300-meter lanes for rifles and machine guns and a hand grenade throwing range. To ensure the safety of the area, up until the Second World War, the range was primarily equipped with ramparts to act as bullet traps. Over time, the ranges were reinforced with concrete walls to protect them against high shots, ricochets or ricochets in order to ensure maximum safety. From 1950 onwards, the German army used the area for shooting training for its soldiers from all branches of the military represented in Cuxhaven. It was regularly updated until it was finally closed in 1989. The company then moved to the Altenwalde site, where a completely new shooting range was built in accordance with today's specifications. The dismantling of the Sahlenburg shooting range with its approximately 3,000 cubic meters of reinforced concrete was completed in 2001 on behalf of the Federal Property Office. The 36-hectare site was then renaturalized and transferred to the city of Cuxhaven.

The shooting range today

Nature has already returned, forest has taken over the leading role and will close the open space. In the future, the remains of the shooting ranges will no longer be visible. At the moment, the intermediate walls can still be seen.Photo source: MB
