28/29.10.40 - Britischer Bombenangriff

Tonight four more aircraft set out to attack the same target as last night. Again, weather and visibility proved variable, with two aircraft finding the target clear of clouds and bombing it with positive results. The other two aircraft, however, had virtually no visibility of the ground during the entire flight, so one bombed the town of Cuxhaven, which probably appeared through a break in the clouds. The fourth aircraft, having caught a glimpse of Wilhelmshaven, then determined that the bombs would not go off. All aircraft reported intense, accurate flak over the selected target areas. All aircraft reached base safely. However, X2994, which had bombed Cuxhaven, suffered a radio failure and was unable to get information through to base, and finally landed just as its engines failed due to lack of fuel. The flight time had been a respectable nine hours and 20 minutes twenty.
